not at all. His 1934 study, in fact, recognized that peoples attitudes (verbal attitudes) toward a person or subject may not actually reflect how theyll behave toward that person/subject in
a certain situation (Wei, 2004). When LaPiere released the results of his now-famous study, he did so in a time during which old assumptions were challenged. Yet in releasing these
results and coming forward with them, LaPiere ended up changing the face of behavioral psychology, as well as the instruments that many behavioral psychologists used at the time.
During 1934, LaPiere traveled with a young Chinese couple throughout the Pacific Coast (as well as another trip across the United States) - they
stayed at well-established hotels in small towns and except for once instance, were well accommodated (Wei, 2004). During this time, LaPiere observed everyones attitude, from bellboys, to elevator operators -
as well as hotel clerks and waitresses (Wei, 2004). Everyone was polite. Meanwhile, LaPiere never let the couple know he was actually observing them to determine others responses to them
(Hock, 1992). However, when he sent a follow-up survey to these hotel owners, asking them if theyd accommodate a Chinese guest, the
answer from most of them was emphatic denial (Wei, 2004). His method was to mail questionnaires to all places he visited, as well as other places in the same area
