Kings. Film makers love him for his spite, his boldness and his errant ways. Actors like him because they are stretched to the limits of human reason and reality. And,
last but certainly not least, audiences love to watch him, though in real life, Richard was not as beloved then as now. Just how have the films since Shakespeares play
held up to translation and have they managed to interject anything more into the play? Does this type of modernization of a classic tale ruin it, or make it accessible
to a segment of the population who might otherwise not see the richness and depth of a Shakespearian tale? Laurence Oliviers Richard the III was the first adaptation of the
play to film. The epic film, which came in at budget and schedule, made famous such lines as My Kingdom for a horse and Now is the winter of my
discontent(Laurence, 2002). Richard is shown as a power hungry tyrant that simultaneously devours and destroys anything or anyone in his path. It seems, after viewing them, that Richards character, as
it rightfully should be, was never upstaged despite the marvelous acting skills of John Gielguld and Claire Bloom. In this version of Richard III several characters were left out,
most notably, but not really missed, were Queen Margaret, and Edward IV. Some of the lengthy dialogue was taken out without detraction from the original play. All in all, it
was a good editing and adaptation given the limits of the 1950s cinema. It was so good that it won the British Oscar for best film. One of the
