Theres Only One Rule for Making Decisions could, at first, be considered misnamed. If one were to examine the title itself, one would assume that in the light of corporate
lapses during the past handful of years, such as Enron, that business ethics in general have flown out the window. However, this
is not the case with this particular book. Though the book itself is long and contains many examples that support the title, the main thesis of the book is that
there IS no such thing as business ethics - rather, businesses need to follow one simple rule - the Golden Rule. As
most of us know, the Golden Rule is mainly to treat others as you, yourself, would like to be treated. Maxwell belief
is that those who ask the simple question, "How would I like to be treated in this situation" ends up providing an "integrity guideline" as he calls it, for any
situation. Its simple. It doesnt require a lot of thought. And theres no complicated ethics codes to have to go through in order to enforce it.
As well see below, Maxwell is not highly in favor of so-called "ethical behavior," because he believes that ethics is very simply an excuse for patting
ourselves on the back, while we hold others to a higher judgment and standard. In this regard, though "ethics" on the surface, is a fine thing to have and to
