And if that werent enough, the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and Pentagon in the United States shocked and stunned the world. In an attempt to try to make sense of it all, people are clinging harder than ever before to their religious faith. As a result, todays religious institutions face a definite challenge - they must provide solace and understanding to non-believers and those who are recently come to the faith, while keeping the core constituency of the congregation happy and satisfied. It is the "reaching out" portion that Pastor Rick Warren addresses in his book, The Purpose Driven Church, which was published by Zondervan in 1995. Although Warrens book was published before the awful events of 2001 took place, there was enough spiritual seeking, even during the mid-1990s, to warrant a book of this type. The Purpose-Driven Church is basically a how-to manual; how to develop a church that will preach the Word in a way that todays congregations will understand and embrace. Warren teaches the concept of "New Evangelicalism," the religion that bases its teachings on the New Testament and Christs Word, and how to best frame the Bible to address todays problems. As a result, the basic tenant of Warrens philosophy is more business-oriented than religious-oriented. He suggests the marketing approach, determine what a congregation needs and then fit the church to supply that need. That Warren is a success in his own church there is no doubt.
