problems, cant be denied. While mostly a hidden crime until recently, media and communications these days are filled with anecdotes and stories about incidences of domestic violence, as well as
the supposed reasons behind it. However, its still difficult to pinpoint where and among which population it occurs; law enforcement officials, especially, are faced with dilemmas as to when a
domestic dispute can be construed as actual violence. Granted, when one domestic partner harms or kills the other in a dispute, the decision to arrest is much easier. But in
instances in which verbal abuse or threats are indicated, rather than physical violence, it isnt quite as easy for the law enforcement official to determine the next step.
In order to clarify demographics and situational variables as they pertain to domestic violence, Amanda Robinson and Meghan Chandek released "The Domestic Violence Arrest
Decision: Examining Demographic, Attitudinal and Situational Variables," which was published January, 2000 in the publication Crime & Delinquency. The purpose of the paper, according to the abstract, is to present
information on a study that examined factors that would influence an officers domestic violence arrest decision (Robinson and Chandek, 2000). Determining police response and decision to a domestic dispute call,
claim the authors, can go a long way toward assisting response to those in need (Robinson and Chandek, 2000). The authors spend
a great deal of time determining previous studies that had examined attitudinal, situational and demographic factors in both why domestic violence occurs and under what circumstances law enforcement action is
