While it is difficult to repay for lives lost, German companies, through various allocations, are doing their best to right the wrongs that their companies committed during the 1930s and 1940s. On March 23, 2000, negotiators finally agreed on how to allocate money from a $5 billion fund that was developed with the help of German industry and the German government to compensate Nazi-era slaves and forced laborers (Agreement Reached on Distribution of Funds for Slave Laborers, 2002). It was agreed that $4 billion would be used to compensate the slaves and forced labor victims, with another $500 million used to cover claims for property, bank accounts and insurance policies stolen by the Nazis (Agreement Reached on Distribution of Funds for Slave Laborers, 2002). An additional $350 million will be used for a foundation go sponsor research and educational products around the theme of Nazi labor (Agreement Reached on Distribution of Funds for Slave Laborers, 2002).
