retire with full honors, a gold watch and, more often than not, a pension plan to keep him paid during his "golden years."
However, with economic times rather sluggish and with the fact that more people job hop and more layoffs occur, the image of the senior citizen sitting in his rocking
chair with a gold watch is fast being replaced by the image of the senior citizen who is taking his or her hard-earned money and starting up another business.
Experts point out that, for one thing, as baby boomers age, theyre less likely to want to retire. In fact many of these
boomers are regarding business ownership as a retirement investment (McDermott, 2003). Part of the reason behind this is because baby boomers are convinced that government assistance in the future will
either be non-existent or extremely limited (McDermott, 2003). Society itself may dictate the idea that retirees might start their own business -
Minerd, for one, notes that as baby boomers retire, the generation behind them, Generation X, will likely settle down and create a new baby boom, thus offering some new entrepreneurial
opportunities for the retirees to help out with everything from baby sitting to food shopping. In addition, baby boomers tend to be the most educated generation in history today -
and theyre likely to hire other retirees to work for them, thus establishing what is termed "gray businesses," that are made up of older workers (Minerd, 1999).
Finally, retirees will want to start their own businesses namely because they dont want to stay at home and be bored.
