Rich Gagnon of American Resume Audits, notes that approximately 80 to 90 percent of the resumes he checks for employers contain incorrect information (Kreitler, 1998-1999). An employee who was, for example, fired for insubordination from a previous job, is not going to be too anxious to explain the six month gap between jobs on her resume because she was fired. This wouldnt provide too strong an impression of her to a future employer. The problem here is that little white lies such as this can vary from time off between jobs all the way to outright lies about certifications and degrees earned or previous jobs held. Also popular for exaggeration are salary information -- and in addition, about two or three percent of resumes reviewed hide criminal records (Kreitler, 1998-1999). Vageesh (2005) points out, as well, that approximately one in five resumes contains some type of discrepancy. While some of the lies may not mean the employee is terrible, one of the reasons for the employment screening process is to ensure that the person being hired is "honest, trustworthy and compatible with your companys culture" (Kreitler, 1998-1999).
