much earlier from those surrounding them by facing their village away from the beautiful vista of the ocean. The isolation imposed on them by the plague is also experienced by
many of the major characters, but of them all there are only a few who manage to remain true to their convictions of responsibility and integrity. When the
town of Oran starts to discover an inordinate amount of dead rats no one is at first much alarmed. The towns physician, who might have noticed, is too busy worrying
about sending his wife away to a sanitarium for her health. However, as more human deaths begin to rise, Dr. Rieux contacts the authorities asking them to proclaim a state
of emergency. This they will not do since Oran is a busy port town. Finally, with the people dropping like flies, the authorities agree to shut the gates of Oran.
It is almost too late. Food grows scarce, people are cut off from their families who live outside of the town. Many, including Rambert, attempts to escape Oran, but fails.
Later, he joins others in their fight against the disease. During great times of duress a persons more primitive and baser personality seems to surface. This is exactly
what happens to most of the people who are quarantined in Oran. Dr. Bernard Rieux, however, is different. The Narrator of the story, itself, he is committed and driven to
ease the suffering of his fellow citizens as they battle the ravages of the plague. Turning no one away he sees nearly everyone in Oran and as such knows all
of them and their secrets. What makes him an unbridled example of a man of responsibility is his unwavering resolve to never compromising his moral principles. Sometimes this makes him
