general answers to questions concerning ethics in research. A researcher tells a potential respondent that an interview will last ten minutes
rather than the thirty minutes he or she actually anticipates. This can be typical of a great many researchers. Fearing that a subject will refuse to participate in an interview
that is too lengthy or time-consuming, the researcher will skirt the truth or tell an outright lie. This kind of behavior tends to be more prevalent if the researcher is
having problems finding enough participants. But this is clearly unethical behavior. One of the credos of the researcher is to "respect human dignity, privacy and autonomy"1. Also important in this
regard is to "keep your promises and agreements; act with sincerity . . ."2. Clearly, in this scenario, the researcher had neither respect for the subject or sincerity and the
ability to keep promises. This is a definite ethics violation. A respondent tells an interviewer that she wishes to cooperate with
the survey, but her time is valuable and, therefore, she expects to be paid for the interview. Many respondents are like this and for good reason - their time is
