attention, personalizing recognition, telling the story, celebrating together and setting the example. In this way, the authors make leadership not so much a disconnect between boss and employee, but rather,
a process that boss and employee go through together. Rather than painting the leader as a cheerleader to motivate the employees and make them get a move on it, Kouzes
and Posner point out that encouragement helps performance, as it gives employees satisfaction that theyre doing a good job. But rather than taking the "back-slapping" approach to encouragement, the authors
go into detail about how the seven essentials are actually tools to help make better leaders. They point out that the core
root of the word "encourage" is "cor," which is Latin for love. "Cor" is also a root of the word "courage." The authors believe that love and courage is necessary
for leadership. Their belief is that most great leaders love their employees - not the kind of love that is talked about in greeting cards and on chocolate boxes -
but love, as in chemistry. The authors pointed out that, in an interview with former CEO and venture capitalist Irwin Federman, Federman expressed that success comes from chemistry between great
leaders and their followers. He also pointed out the importance of love within that chemistry. "You dont love someone because of who
