about the dangers of second-hand smoke. Health risks are certainly a compelling enough reason to take cigarettes of the market. The problem
in doing so, however, is that smokers would scream that taking them away is an infringement on their rights. Smoking is a personal issue, they point out. But there is
more to cigarettes than lung cancer, strokes or the effects of second-hand smoke. Cigarettes need to be removed because they are costing society, as a whole, more money.
How can this be, when smoking is a somewhat solitary activity? The conscientious smoker might point out that he or she is very careful
when it comes to lighting up - no one in his/her area could possibly be imbibing in second-hand smoke. But theres more to it than that. The secondary diseases from
cigarette smoking end up driving up healthcare costs. Society, as a whole, ends up paying for them in one way or another. Lets
look at a specific example. Shah and Cole (2010) point out that socioeconomic status tends to be an influencing factor of who smokes - the better-educated one is, and the
better off financially one is, the less likely that individual is to smoke. Added to this is that a higher percentage of individuals who are uninsured or who are on
