1950s, as the person being interviewed was born in 1952. The 1950s followed World War II, during which young soldiers came home to start families and careers (Bradley, 2002). As
a result, American industry expanded to meet peacetime needs, and families grew - sparking what was called the baby boom (Bradley, 2002). The 1950s also saw the growing fear of
Cold War and anti-communism, as fueled by Senator Joe McCarthy and his televised hearings about Communists in the army (Bradley, 2002). There was more to fear, as during late 1957,
the Soviet Union began launching satellites into outer space, sparking fears that Americans could be spied upon by the "eye in the sky." In terms of civil rights, racial segregation
is ruled unconstitutional in the public schools by the U.S. Supreme Courts, but very few schools took that to heart, insisting that "separate but equal" was the way to go
(Bradley, 2002). While housing was growing, however, so were fears of atomic warfare, especially in light of the Korean conflict and what was occurring in Indochina (Bradley, 2002).
For the first time, Americans could tune in to much of what was going on, at least in terms of sports, as television
