claimed that Chaucer was a less than saintly author, thumbing his nose at the church in his tales and depictions of the characters. Others state that he was a very
devout man and that his use of religious symbols indicate this. Whichever is correct maybe only Chaucer himself knows, but what seems to be readily observed is that he did,
indeed, use a great deal of religious symbols and biblical allusions in his works. The Wife of Baths Tale is perhaps one of the more popular of the tales in
the book. The Wife of Bath has been interpreted as Chaucers deliberate moral satire upon the human, especially female, emotional desires. A good deal of the tale is hinged upon
her experience with wedded bliss. Her final assertion is that in a perfect world, men would submit to their wives then there would be continual world peace. Of course, she
says this tongue in cheek, given the content of the rest of her romantic tale. Additionally, the overall effect of the passage is a contrast of literal words and actual
underlying meanings. Many times what the Wife says is in direct opposition to what the reader/listener knows that the Wife believes. In this tale, the pilgrims learn about love and
all of its aspects. This also ties in with the idea that they are traveling to the city of Canterbury to be redeemed. Here, the power of redemptive love is
explored. As the Millers tale goes the Miller claims that he will quiet the Knights tale. In actuality what he probably meant was that he will make the Knights
