evolution of modern American literature. This evolution would take place through Hawthornes literary endeavors, to be certain, however, the evolution was not a perfect one. The use of religious symbolism, such as is found in Hawthornes work, in particular Rappaccinis Daughter, goes beyond serving a literary purpose and instead can be said to jar the reader from the original theme of the work. Hawthorne came by his religious fervor honestly, as countless generations of his family had been devout Puritans living in New England. After he finished his bit of college, he would return home and fully begin to embrace the religion of his ancestors. This is apparent in his writing. Eventually, Hawthorne would develop a style that would accommodate the rhetoric of his belief system. Hawthorne is difficult to read by todays literary styles, yet the elements of symbolism and allegory are very keen and bear study, as well as the insightful glimpses of the human souls he portrays. In "Rappaccinis Daughter," Hawthorne writes the story of a very unusual girl, Beatrice, and her botanist father. It is easy to see that he treates his daughter much like the rare flowers he raises, meaning that he does not touch her and seems to almost raise her in a symbolistic, human type greenhouse. That the girl is as rare a beauty as any of the doctors flowers, is evident when Giovanni, a suitor, comes to call. He is amazed how Beatrice can handle the exotic plants that the doctor has just cautioned Giovanni about touching. In fact, Beatrice seems to go out of her way to touch the plants, even caressing them as if they are favored pets or dolls. At first, it seems as if the girl merely has a green thumb but as the story unfolds, ...
