that religion is not a part of their lives because they can no longer find that to which they can identify. Despite any and all reasons, Robert Bellah, in his
book, Habits of the Heart, indicates that whether people realize it or not, religious organizations have and continue to influence society, and in many ways, each individual on the planet,
regardless of conscious affiliation. A quick summation of the problem, as Bellah lays it out, is that modern society has lost some very important components of its earlier cultural context.
There is a longing for the good old days without an understanding of what made them good. There is a certain hope for better things, but no plan for reaching
the goal. There is struggle, but no tangible reward. In the end, he states, this is a type of cancerous society, one that cannot sustain the human psyche for long.
While one has to agree with their assessment to some extent, what becomes blatantly apparent is that each individual who contributed to the writing of this book are several generations
removed from modern society. The examples that they hold up as golden are just as suspect as the claim that modern society longs for the good old days without knowing
what made them good. For example, Bellah points toward the Puritans and their amazing abilities toward daily commitment. What he and the others overlook is the fact that the Puritan
sect was highly and outrageously oppressive toward women, and attempted to remove the very humanity from their midst. Likewise one has to take exception to their claim that small town
