Once upon a time in any given corporation, the idea of motivational and reinforcement strategies used to encourage employees would have been laughable. The corporate system at the time was based strong on the military - the commander (i.e., CEO or president) would issue an order, and employees were expected to carry those orders out, on pain of termination. This technique was necessary in the military, a life-or-death institution in which anyone showing defiance could cause the deaths of a lot of men. But the situation was different in corporate America, which was not a life or death situation. This is why, in the 20th century, different types of reinforcement practices were developed and put into place in an effort to encourage employees to operate at their best. In this paper, well examine some of these reinforcement strategies, and determine if theyre positive, negative or continuous. Well also define the strengths and shortcomings of each reinforcement example. Defining Positive, Negative, Continuous Before moving on to the different types of reinforcement and whether theyre positive, negative or continuous, it would be a good idea to understand what these concepts mean. Most of these are self-explanatory, but a review is a good idea. Positive reinforcement is a situation in which the introduction of a stimulus (such as a reward or penalty) increases and/or maintains the likelihood of a recurrence of the same desired behavioral or output response (Positive Reinforcement, 2009). ...
