and determine the identity and intended functions of major REIs. The definition of an REI is an organization or group pulled together
by sovereign states of a particular region, "to which members states have transferred competence in respect of matters governed by this Convention and which has been duly authorized, in accordance
with its internal procedures, to sign, ratify, accept, approve, or accede to it (ECCHM, 2005). In other words, the "convention" mentioned is the Convention on Biological Diversity, with regional economic
integration bringing together member states in a region to deal with environmental issues. The Convention goes into the detail about the importance of biodiversity programs, while affirming that the member
states have rights over their own biological resources (ECCHM, 2005). Along those lines, however, the member states are also responsible for "conserving biological diversity," as well as utilizing resources in
a sustainable matter, which does little, or no, harm to the environment (ECCHM, 2005). The Convention features a strategic plan that outlines
beliefs and thoughts to the Convention, as well as a 2010 Biodiversity Target that (hopefully) will reduce biodiversity loss locally, regionally, nationally and internationally (ECCHM, 2005). Also built into the
Target is the goal to contribute to alleviation of poverty (ECCHM, 2005). Basically, therefore, the REIs allow nations in a region to
band together, allowing others to take the lead on biodiversity, while they follow. Identify and present at least two other REIs relevant to Brazil and United Arab Emirates.
