this topic might be discussed. Once upon a time, human resources (also known as "personnel") was considered to be a paper-pushing, pencil-pushing department.
HR was where all the applications were stored, as well as the yearly performance appraisals. HR handled the benefits; it was also the department employees would go to if they
got a raise, were fired, or had to give an exit interview. HR also handled any type of personnel complaint, from an overbearing boss, to discrimination, to sexual harassment.
In many companies, this is still the role and function of HR. However, in some companies, the above is only a small portion of
what human resources actually does, or is. Human resources is defined as "the organizational function that deals with the people" as well as "the people that staff and operate an
organization" (Heathfield). Within this definition, however, is a whole slew of components that make up this interesting field of HR. The Components of Human Resources
