can adapt to external environments through methods such as knowledge sharing, building employees skills, developing a learning culture and so on. The literature also makes creating a learning organization seem
fairly simple - encourage knowledge sharing and train employees, this literature tells us, and the organization will be well on its way to becoming a learning one. However, there is
a great deal more to creating a learning organization than throwing training at employees and telling them to keep up with trends in their fields (and to share those trends).
The organization has to provide the resources and environment necessary to stimulate learning and knowledge sharing. My particular organization is an online news
organization that covers commercial real estate news. This organization has regional bureau chiefs and reporters who are responsible for writing about the latest news in their region. The management of
this organization exhorts the editorial staff to frequently check the online wiki for brainstorming ideas and also tells the staff that they need to read up on each others stories
and other publications so everyone knows what the other is doing and can, in turn, help others out. The problem, however, is that the employees have little time to do
all the extra learning and training stuff. Because each bureau is responsible for developing and posting three to five hours a day (and has to do so on very short
staff), there is little time left over for learning, sharing or extra reading. Characteristics of the Ideal Learning Organization One aspect of
