reasons for this, which range from so-so pay, to lack of career advancement possibilities, to burnout. Other causes of direct care employee turnover include poor work and job design for workers, a lack of training for supervisors of these direct care workers and even the poor quality of the organization that supplies care to the elderly (Harris-Kojetin et al, 2004). It can be heart-rending for some of these workers, who are dedicated to serving their charges, to see care denied patients because its not financially feasible. Unfortunately, the goal of most management of senior care centers and long-term nursing homes is compliant with federal state rule and regulations; developing employee commitment to the organization tends to be last on the list (Tang et al, 1996). Not only does this impact the employee, it also impacts the worker. It can be exhausting, going to work day after day, only to keep running up against the same rules and regulations and reasons why things cant be done. Its little wonder, therefore, that someone going into long-term care as a field becomes disillusioned and ends up leaving that field because he/she was unable to truly make a difference in someones life. What about raising wages? Stott again points out that given the limitations of funding from various government organizations (such as Medicare), some organizations are severely hampered when it comes to increasing the wages of its employees. Furthermore, increasing wages isnt exactly the be-all and end-all when it comes to keeping employees happy, content and more importantly, around. The key here is to remind employees why they took the jobs in the first place, and to make them feel welcome and needed on their jobs, rather than making them feel as though their cogs in some uncaring, ...
