needs, an overall knowledge of the company is necessary. Most companies, when switching to new technology often opt to upgrade to a database system coupled with DSS technology. The
fictional company called Baker and Young is a national distributor of various manufacturing equipment and supplies for those machines. The main way in which they obtain orders from clients are
from phone orders and sales reps. The information on the sale is gathered via a form which is filled out by hand and delivered to a central data processing center
where it is entered into a computer by hand. This is very time consuming considering the technology which is available. Doing anything by hand is not efficient if it
can be done by computer, or if the middleman can be eliminated all together. An online presence is also vital for any business in this new era of business. This
way, a client finds out he or she is out of certain manufacturing supplies they simply dial up to the companys website then enter in their order. No sales rep
had to call on them and they did not have to place a phone call. Likewise the process of delivering the information to a central data processing person has been
bypassed also. The process has taken less than ten minutes of the clients time and human error has been lessened. Conversely, there has to be a program in place
to handle such an ordering system as this. This is where the DSS comes into play. Data mining such as this allows an organization to be proactive, rather than reactive.
