of a tendency to assume that Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a relatively new condition, there were in fact similar conditions which have been identified and studied since at least the nineteenth century. In the early 1800s doctors diagnosed soldiers with "exhaustion" resulting from the stress of battle, and it would appear from descriptions of this "exhaustion" that it shared many characteristics with the modern PTSD. Even closer was the "railway hysteria" noted by British doctors in people who had survived the major train disasters of the period. Probably the most familiar variant of PTSD is the "shell shock" suffered by soldiers during the First World War. This manifested itself in a number of ways, and as Barker (1991) points out, the methods of treating the condition tended to be brutal: medical staff were not particularly concerned with the well-being of the patients, but only in getting them fit enough to return to battle. Consequently, there was little of the psychotherapeutic approach most often seen today: instead, electric shock and similar harsh methodologies were used to restore speech and "cure" withdrawal. The designation "shell shock" was replaced by "combat fatigue" in the Second World War: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder itself does not appear in the literature until the 1980s, when it was listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) which provides all the official definitions of mental illnesses for the American Psychiatric Association and is therefore regarded as the APAs "bible".
