to be said that film is an emotional medium, perhaps as much or moreso than novels. This is because the visual element is added to the senses interpreting the story.
Given this, then, the body language as well as the dialogue goes into the telling of the story. Conflict happens in many ways. Man versus Nature, Man versus Self,
Man versus Man, are generally the categories they fall in to. In James Deans movie, Rebel Without a Cause, the nature of the conflict is both Man versus Self and
Man versus Man. In this case, the protagonists conflicts arise in his problems with society (the other teens and the towns values) and himself. He also struggles within himself, searching
to end his loneliness, but never seeming to quite find it. 400 Blows features a protagonist whose conflicts echo those of Jim Stark. Antoine Doinel is a young boy
from a dysfunctional family situation who falls into a life of crime. Lashing out at authority and the system he is shown in a sympathetic light. This, then, is a
child who is the product of a failed system, this film seems to be saying. This film was a social commentary of sorts, which used the dysfunction of Jim
Starks family situation to illustrate what was a growing concern during this time. Consider that America had survived yet another World War and had come out on top. Economically, America
