dignified surrender without dropping a many megatons atomic bomb on innocent people and cities. While its easy, more than 50 years after the event, to criticize the fact that it
happened, to those U.S. leaders living through the frenetic days of World War II, dropping the bombs was the only way to assure a swift end to the war, and
a swift end to any future U.S. casualties. The making of the a-bomb The history of the atom bomb goes all the
way back to the presidential term of Franklin D. Roosevelt and his initiation of the Manhattan project (Loebs, 1995). The basic reason why the bomb was created by the United
States in the first place was so that Nazi Germany wouldnt get there first and perhaps use the bomb against America and its allies (Levins, 1995; see also Loebs, 1995).
The assumption was that Germans were working as feverishly on atomic power as was the U.S. - and it was only late in 1944 that the United States learned that
Germany had given up on working on the A-bomb some years before (Levins, 1995). Right before the United States conducted its first
