the sleek and smooth personalities who bring the local newscast in the evening. These images, however, do not truly depict nor represent the majority of the population, especially where this
image pertains to women, and womens magazines seem to be among the worst culprits of all. From a social standpoint, one might analyze this trend by womens magazines in
order to gain the motivations which gave rise to the practice. What were the underlying factors which prompted a stick thin woman to be considered desirable, while the woman who
varies from this image is considered sub-standard? How might women overcome this trend and what does this mean in regard to the media and its portrayal of women as they
really are? There are worlds of unwritten social rules that are followed every day, whether we are conscious of them or not. Some of these rules include attire, occupations, even
relationships. Many of these unwritten rules are reinforced by the womens magazines. Womans Own, a UK based magazine, suggests that they cater to the normal or average woman, especially the
housewife, but in reality, the image that is portrayed is as unbalanced as those presenting sleek and slender fashion models on the front cover. For example, a current issue
of Womans Own has a woman on the front who is not runway model glamorous, but neither is she overweight or flawed in any way. The magazine articles all suggest
that the modern woman is able to manage a six figure career, still have time to bus the kids from one activity to the next, all the while managing to
whip up a seven course gourmet dinner that her whole family will love. This is no where near the reality of most womens situations. It can be said that
