what is theorized to be true. Theoretical entities in scientific theories, such as thyrotropin and dark matter for example, are often tied to physical observations in only very indirect ways.
This has led some philosophers to suggest that there is no necessity to assume the validity of theoretical items in theory, as long as the phenomena is saved. Is it
simply a case of fact versus fiction, or is it something more? This debate was waged by many great philosophers, including Rene Descartes and Francis Bacon. Rene Descartes strove
to sort out what was real and what was unsubstantiated common thought. But he went beyond the proving of this with his quest to understand that mechanism by which mankind
utilized the senses in determining reason. Therefore, he was fascinated with reality, or rather, what is and what is not. According to Descartes a human being used his facilities to
gain knowledge of his own world. No one would particularly argue with this, except, that ones definition of reality may not be the definition of anothers definition. And, it can
be further stated that the senses utilized in drawing conclusive evidence to the mind about the world, may not be the same facilities that another used to perceive the world.
Therefore, realities for these individuals would logically be at a variance. Francis Bacon, considered the father of modern science, as opposed to Descartes claim to fame for philosophy, seemed
to acknowledge that certain psychological barriers within a person were at most just as limiting as ones senses. As a result he began the daunting task of recording all past
