the kingdom of all the knowledge that exists in written form. Given the awesome power that reading holds, it is shocking to find that there still persists a segment of
the American public that are still illiterate. Therefore, much research has been done to make certain that children are not falling through the cracks and that every possible opportunity is
given for the student to attain this skill. One of the research areas that have been focused on is how reading in a reading group is a social activity
as opposed to an academic one. Patricia Encisco in her article, Taking Our Seats: The Consequences of Positioning in Reading Assessments, talks about how generally speaking there will be two
or three children who will consistently raise their hands in reading group to offer the correct answer to a teachers question about the text. What Enciso states goes on in
this case is that positioning has taken place. Positioning is a psychological tool that human beings utilize to assume certain ways of talking or acting with one another(Encisco, 2001).
This is limiting, however, as the assumptions may not be real. For example, she writes, take those children who never raise their hand. They are affected by the positioning of
those who constantly raise their hands. To their way of thinking they are either readers or non-readers. Encisco states that internally this sends the message that the non-reader is less
successful while the readers are reliable and successful. Recently, research has stated that there are basically ten various personality traits that determine academic achievement. C.B Johnson in his dissertation,
Personality Traits and Learning Styles: Factors Affecting the Academic Achievement of Underachieving Gifted Students, states that in the final analysis those who were considered to be achievers were typically introverted,
