history, starting in the early 1960s and moving through defeat of the Taliban (the first time) in the early 2000s. When I first
picked up "A Thousand Splendid Suns," I wasnt sure what to expect. I knew from the "back matter" that this was a book about Afganistans women, and that it spanned
a 40-year period in the lives of three of those women. I also knew that this was penned by Khaled Hosseini, an Afgan-American writer who had achieved success through his
first novel (also based in Afghanistan) "Kite Runner." But when I read through the book, it totally blew me away. Let me start
out by saying that this isnt an easy book to read. Afghanistan is not an easy country to read about - its history is violent, consistently sparked by civil wars,
occupations and inter-tribal strife. Furthermore, the overwhelming theme deals with abuse of women because of Afghanistans highly patriarchal regime. I found it fascinating that the father of one of the
women (Laila) mentioned that women are freer under Soviet communism than they were under the Afghan form of government. The other aspect I found interesting (though slightly repellent) was when
Mariam first set foot on the street, covered in her head-to-toe burqa. Though most western women find the burqa a horrible way to keep women subservient, Miriam realizes that the
burqa actually provides privacy to her, as well as anonymity - both of which are hugely comforting. I wasnt sure how to react to that - the fact that Miriam
