is representative of the rationalist perspective, and believed that the human mind acts as an active originator of experience rather than just a passive recipient of perception. On the other
hand, philosophers such as David Hume believed that a human beings concept of self is largely subjective and that it is possible that this identity or concept exists because of
its relationship with other objects, environments and the continued presence and predictability of those objects. Given these two divisive forms of philosophical thought, which really seems to offer the best
model for human behavior? Historically, what happened to bring about such a division in philosophical thought was the fact that Science had come onto the scene. The straight and narrow
line that had been suggested and supported by the Catholic Church was now being challenged by scientific discoveries that explained many of those things that had formerly been a mysterious
work of God. This placed mankind in a quandary as to how they should define the areas of reason, knowledge and faith. Immanuel Kant, then, as well as
the rationalists of the day and age, totally separated the idea of reason from the religious. The act of reasoning, they philosophized, had the awesome task of organizing human life
here on Earth. This of course, did not go over well with the Church who was used to organizing everyones life on Earth. Reason, then takes place independently of experience,
he seems to be saying. And, as it applies to morality, he suggested that morality is dictated by reason to oneself. This, then, is the power of reason over objects,
