Given that both Michelangelo and Da Vinci were at one time Raphaels teachers, it is no wonder that this already talented artist would reach great fame. EARLY LIFE According
to most records Raphaels mother died when he was quite young as did his father. He found himself orphaned at age 11, but because of his talent he was taken
on as a student by several well known artists of the time(Raphael). He would soon outstrip their ability to teach him anything more and he would move on. When
he was seventeen he would make the choice to move to Florence. This singular decision, it has to be thought, was a turning point for Raphael. It was here that
he would meet Michelangelo and Leonardo. However, even as their student Raphael would adhere to his own visions and his own unique perspective on the world. His works, while certainly
influenced by these other two artists, still retains a character that clearly establishes his own style. CHARACTERISTICS Raphaels artwork, in comparison to his teachers works, are lighter, gentler, more accessible
to the general public. The emphasis on perspectives and the often symbolic relationship between the figures and the architecture are common tones one sees in a Raphael work. His depictions
of people have a serene quality to them as if the person were completely innocent and good. One can see Da Vincis influence on Raphael in his work with various
Madonnas. From Da Vinci he learned the Florentine technique of "building up his composition in depth with pyramidal figure masses; the figures are grouped as a single unit, but each
retains its own individuality and shape"(Vasari 164). Idealized versions of people seem to be one of the greatest characteristics of Raphael. His people are all rounded and soft, gentle
