lies in the question as to whether Jefferson actually did father Hemings children. Another part of the controversy involves the nature of their relationship. Were they lovers? Or was it
a case of forced sex? Though well never know the answer to this question, we can attempt to speculate through documents and
observations of historians. That Jefferson was a slave owner was well-known. That he put in a prohibition against slavery in one of the drafts of the U.S. Constitution was also
well known. Jefferson penned slavery as the "cruel war against human nature itself," and blamed King George III for "suppressing every legislative
attempt to prohibit or restrain this execrable commerce" (Mason, 2003). That this slavery prohibition was taken out of the constitution before the final draft was well-known; it was too controversial
a clause to leave in for ratification of this document (Mason, 2003). Yet the U.S. Constitution was not the only place where
Jefferson made his views on slavery (for the general populace) known. In his notes for the Virginia Constitution, Jefferson also notes the desire for the "gradual abolition of slavery" as
well as "naturalization of immigrants" (American Memory, 2003). Again, through these two documents, Jefferson espoused the cause of freedom for pretty much anyone who lived in the United States (who
