and Michael Thompson explore some ways in which caregivers, parents, and educators might address the special concerns and needs of boys growing up in todays volatile culture. According to Kindlon
and Thompson the United States is loaded with boys who are at a greater risk than ever before for suicide, substance abuse, violent acts and extreme loneliness. This would seem
to point out that boys are not receiving something in their home lives, their school lives, their culture, that is a crucial component to their well being. Kindlon and Thompson
take real world case studies which they have been involved in and present their beliefs on what these missing components are. One of the many ways in which the
American culture is toxic to boys is that it denies their right to an emotional life at all(Kinlon, Thompson 1999). "Walk it off" boys are told when they become injured.
"Dont be a crybaby" others might state. Admirable qualities such as compassion, affection and sensitivity are downplayed and rejected, while acts of aggression and destruction are encouraged. Is it little
wonder, then, that there are so many divorces? Little boys grow up to be men who cannot or will not show their emotions; not even to the people that they
love. Kindlon and Thompson coin the phrase, "emotional illiteracy" Things have gotten this way because there seems to be a type of
