Hansberry discusses dreams, but she also discusses the importance of family as a part of such a dream. Walter, the brothers dream is a giving one -- he wants money
so he can afford nice things for his family (Cocola and Douthat). Basically, throughout the play, the entire Younger family tries to obtain their dreams -- but they all end
up realizing that the perfect dream is the American dream, that of a house (Cocola and Douthat). A house, after all, unites the family -- and family is what its
pretty much all about. Hansberry also writes about the importance of being "color blind" when it comes to regarding other people. She
does this by weaving the theme of racial discrimination throughout the plot -- and its apparent when Lindner is sent to try to convince the Youngers not to move into
Clybourne Park, which is an all-white neighborhood (Cocola and Douthat). Though this particular aspect of discrimination threatens to tear the Younger family apart, the discrimination actually brings them closer together,
as they face the discrimination with the power of togetherness, as a family. Much of the play also focuses on embracing ones
heritage -- and one of the most powerful heritage in terms of the African-American culture is family, and respect for ones parents. One of the main symbols in the play,
in fact, is Mamas plant -- as Mama cares for the plant and nurtures it, she tries to do the same thing for her family (Cocola and Douthat). Her dedication
