When Arizona governor Jan Brewer signed Arizona SB 1070 into law, the states population, as well as the population of the United States, was in an uproar.
The law itself allowed law enforcement officials to ask for identification papers if there was a compelling suspicion that someone might be in the United States illegally - it was
Arizonas disgust over the federal governments "do nothing" stance on illegal immigration, especially from Mexico. Yet many people saw this bill as direct discrimination against Hispanics - what other "compelling
evidence" would law enforcement need, other than looks or language? What this argument failed to take into account was that police werent going to willy nilly stop brown people on
the streets and ask them for papers. The argument also failed to take into account that "Hispanics" can be white, as well as brown. Yet this latest salvo against illegal
immigration seemed to smack of racism, and groups such as LULAC were up in arms over what seemed to be overt discrimination. Is
there racial discrimination in the United States against Hispanics? Is it simply illegal immigration, as some would point out? Or are Hispanics, as an entire culture, being targeted for discrimination?
