characters are isolated from each other within the trap of their own preconceptions, unable to successfully reach out to others. For example, in "Araby," a young boy finds that his
obsession with a girl does not match the reality of the situation. In "Eveline," the protagonist gives up her chance at a new life, rather than face the challenges of
living more fully. However, particularly in "The Dead," Joyce illustrates how people can be emotionally isolated even within the midst of their family and relations. Joyce does this by
allowing his readers into the thoughts his protagonist, Gabriel. The narrative describes Gabriels concern over making an appropriate speech at his aunts annual Christmas party. His thoughts reveal Gabriel to
be a meticulous man who is constantly concerned with how others perceive him and the impression he is making. For example, he considers using a quote from Robert Browning in
his speech, but rejects this idea for fear that his audience will think he is "airing his superior education" (Joyce). Such indications of Gabriels thought processes by Joyce not only
show his extreme self-consciousness, but also the compensatory mechanism that is common to insecure people to secretly consider himself superior to his peers. The story dramatizes how Gabriels mindset
isolates him from true intimacy. For example, when his wife walks past him, Gabriel longs "to run after her noiselessly, catch her by the shoulders and say something foolish and
affectionate into her ear," but he does not (Joyce). The same fears that paralyze the boy in "Araby" and Eveline keep Gabriel immobile and isolated. How does Joyce present
