Yet, in this day and age, and in a nation that supports freedom of expression, the concept of challenging the opinions of others is rather refreshing. It is how one gets to the truth. The Socratic method for example, or the challenging of ones observations, is a way to get to the truth to some extent. When things are not black and white, challenging the opinions of others can prompt one to gain perspective. It is all too often the case that an individual gives a speech and what they are saying comes across almost as fact. One is hard pressed to challenge such an arrogant speaker. Yet, the truth is that in many instances there is not one truth and most analyses or opinions can and should be challenged. That said, there are times when it is not appropriate to challenge opinions. In political or academic speech, when someone is paid to make a statement for example, and there is no question and answer period, it may be rude to voice ones opposition. When everyone is in agreement at a cocktail party, some communications experts say that it is better to agree for social cohesion. At the same time, for those who are flexible, and clear thinking, and mature, lively conversation is entrenched in the idea of challenge. It is perfectly okay to challenge the opinion of others, but in some instances it is difficult, such as when family is involved and it is hard to go against the family rule.
