(Ethnography). Contemporary ethnography relies on fieldwork, with the ethnographer typically living among the people who are the subject of study for a year or more, learning their languages and participating
in everyday activities of life (Ethnography). Fernea and Fernea write that the veil is the outward sign of complex reality. Explain. Clothing has symbolic significance within culture. To
the Wet, the veil, worn by women in Middle Eastern societies, symbolizes the "subjugation of one portion of humanity" (Fernea and Fernea 254). However, to the Islamic Arab women who
actually wear the veil, it is perceived as a means of visually announcing themselves to the public world as Moslems and, therefore, someone "to be treated with respect" (Fernea and
Fernea 255). It conveys the message: "Treat me with respect" (Fernea and Fernea 255). Furthermore, to wear the veil in the Muslim world is a status symbol, as its use
is a "luxury for poorer families" and signals that the woman wearing it does not have to do manual labor (Fernea and Fernea 255). Explain why it took so
