that some individual make better leaders than others. The concept of trait theory was built on the idea of the great man theory where great leaders were studies to identify
commonalities in their personalities. In trait theory we are looking at the traits in general rather than individual leaders. The aim was to identify traits that could be adopted
to enhance leadership skills, but this was also an approach that was highly constrained as research indicated that there was no a single traits or even a single group of
characteristics that would be associated with good leadership (Huczyniski and Buchanan, 2008). This research can make interesting reading, but it adds little to the understanding and theory of leadership and
furthermore traits are unlikely to be learnt so in practical terms, even if specific traits had been identified the practical applications would have been limited.
The study of leadership moved onto behavioural theories. Instead of looking at the characteristics or traits the focus was on the actions and behaviour of leaders, in
this approach leadership was perceived in the context of human behaviour. This was an important development in terms of leadership theory as it was an approach that would allow for
practical application. While leaders may not easily be able to change their traits, they may be able to adapt their behaviour patterns. In addition to this there was also the
