experience? Japanese culture is extremely regimented. The focus is on the contribution of the individual to society. Smith describes how children are acclimated to this cultural paradigm beginning
in middle school. Where Japanese children experienced some autonomy and individuality as young children, they begin to assimilate their role in Japanese culture via such conventions as school uniforms, standardized
haircuts, identical book-bags, and even instruction on the "proper" distance to have between the eyes of the student and the page being read (77). By emphasizing uniformity, the Japanese "learn
to perform only when the script is written" (78), that is, to always follow the "script" of cultural norms. 2. Several of the societies we have studied have military
traditions; compare the military traditions of Japan and France or perhaps the US. Bushido, "The way of the warrior," is the codified traditions of the samurai, the warrior
class (195). The customs of the samurai came to be seen by the culture in general as embodying the spirit of what it means to be Japanese. To explain
the centrality of the militaristic spirit in Japan, Smith refers to the tale Forty-Seven Ronin (195). The moral of this story suggests a society "dedicated to the complete eradication of
individual judgement in the name of spirit" (195-196). While military traditions are honored in the US, they are not innately associated with the spirit of the country. Furthermore, while the
US military emphasizes following the chain of command, Americans still tend to gravitate toward the "maverick" who still uses his own judgement and moral integrity in making decisions. 3.
