compete in its infant industry in ways that its competitors were not. When its operating system became firmly ensconced on virtually every computer sold by U.S. manufacturers, Netscape and
others complained that Microsoft had formed a monopoly and was "anti-competitive." While its true that Microsoft used some questionable practices in later years, it is also true that the
company built its success in part by working harder than its competitors and doing what they believed was beneath them. The Justice Department dealt with Microsoft, increasing competition among
operating systems in the U.S. Increasing competition within the U.S., however, decreases the countrys comparative advantage for the product in overseas markets.
When a U.S. company must compete against a foreign one based in a country that does not have such stringent anti-trust laws, it faces more difficulty than if it could
