crew encounter are the Cicones, who were allies of the fallen Trojans. Odysseus and his men sack one of their cities, but rather than leave afterward, they stay and feast
on the Cicones livestock. This is not necessarily because the Cicones were allies of their enemy but simply because Odysseus and his men are greedy. This greed gives the Cicones
time to warn their neighbors, who then attack killing seventy-two of the Greeks. Odysseus learns that greed is not only immoral, but in many cases not logical. In the
land of the Lotus-eaters, which is their next landfall, Homer pictures a land without strife. The lotus plant, which the inhabitants and some of the crew consume, leaves them not
caring about anything, including returning home. Although a totally peaceful land is supposedly the ideal, the ancient Greek perspective in this case is that a degree of strife is necessary
for people to be human. In the next land, Odysseus encounters the Cyclopes, a race of one-eyed giants who are incredibly powerful. Odysseus manages to fool one Cyclopes, Polyphemus who
holds the Greeks captive in his cave, into allowing them to escape by first blinding his one eye while he sleeps. However, Odysseus is so proud of his cleverness that
he shouts his real name to the blind giant, telling him who his enemy is. Polyphemus can now pray to his father, the god of the sea Poseidon, for
retribution. It is because of Odysseus over-abundant pride that he and his crew have such difficulty reaching their homeland of Ithaca, as Poseidon controls the seas. Therefore, it can be
