the morning for a visit with her nephew and his new bride, Hedda. (The student should notes that different translations of the play may list the characters names differently. For
example, some translations list "Jurgen" as "George" because this is the English version of the name.) The conversation between Jurgen and his aunt indicate that he expects to receive a
professorship. Additionally, this first episode introduces the main characters and quickly establishes the personality of each, shows that Hedda is a woman who is intent on being as disagreeable as
possible. She complains of too much sunshine, too many flowers, and is intentionally rude to Aunt Julle. Mrs. Elvsted arrives and relates the news that Ejlert Lovborg, Jurgens academic
rival, has overcome alcoholism and written a brilliant book. This scene also introduces the idea that Lovborg could start drinking again, as Mrs. Elvsted is worried about this. Judge Brack
arrives and his news on Elvsted introduces the idea that he could get the university appointment that Jurgen has been counting on for himself. Throughout Act II, complications serve to
enlighten the audience further about Heddas characters and her duplicity. Lovborg loses his manuscript while walking home drunk and this provides the motivation that Hedda will manipulate into prompting his
suicide. When Judge Brack discerns Heddas role in Lovborgs suicide, he threatens blackmail and Hedda, too, commits suicide. Why is the title of the play Hedda Gabler rather than
Hedda Tesman?: This is due to the fact that while Hedda is married, she is married in name only. She feels no ties of affection or loyalty that would make
