population, which is determined by various biological and social factors (Robbins 162). The presence or absence of birth control devices is the primary cultural and social factor influencing variation
in birth rates from one region to another (162). However, the length of time between births can also be influenced by other cultural factors. For instance, breastfeeding generally suppresses the
process of ovulation, which naturally delays the birth of the next child until after the first has been weaned. Therefore, in quite a few societies, children were not weaned until
between the ages of three and five (162). Breastfeeding has decreased over the last half century because of patterns of consumption, as advertising has promoted the sale of powdered infant
formula (163). Some societies have influenced the birth rate by practicing a sexual taboo during the period immediately following birth. Whether sex is prohibited for a few months, or a
few years, depends on the culture and the society The average life expectancy within a society, i.e. the death rate, influences population growth in that the more people who survive
through their reproductive years, the greater the chance to increase the population (164). For instance, in a culture where the life expectancy is only twenty years, the number of women
who live through their reproductive years are far less in number than in a society where the average life expectancy is forty years (164). Sometimes the death rate has been
