impact of minorities on political parties has been particularly interesting. By 2020, however, the collective minority will become the majority and white Americans the minority. This cant help
but have an even more pronounced impact on the nature of US political parties. Since the 1930s and the Civil Rights movement our political parties have become progressively more
liberal. It is logical to contend that with the continued growth of minorities we will become even more liberal over time.
When reviewing minority impact on political parties it is important to note that although the Civil Rights Act was first passed in 1866, immediately after the Civil War, minorities
still had a long way to go to achieve true equality. This was even truer for non-black minorities than it was for blacks.
The passage of the Civil Rights Act guaranteed the rights of former slaves to vote and made other provisions regarding the legal rights of the former slaves.
Many blacks rose to positions of substantial power during this period. Not only were black votes placed, black candidates were elected to the offices of Governor, Lieutenant Governors,
Senators, and Congressmen. Black faces dominated the state legislatures throughout the South and irrespective of their relative experience in politics produced legislation which was considered progressive by the standards
of the day. Much of that legislation remains in place today. In the meantime, however, other minorities in this country were still afforded essentially no Civil Rights.
One has to only visit our Native American reservations or to talk to minorities such as Asian Americans whose family members passed on the horrors of those years.
