Social progress is led by the discoveries and new technologies, these may range form the past developments such as the printing press leading to social development (Eisenstein, 1980), though the changes created by mobile telephones. There are two forms of this theory, soft and hard where the soft form is adopted, it is accepted that technology is one of many influences and that impacts on social development, the hard model is that which states technology is the dominant impact on social development (Pacey, 1983, Cross et al, 1974). In effect this is this is the difference between a perspective that the internet MIGHT HELP improve the quality of life, and the internet WILL help improve the quality of life. Social determinism is the opposite model, here it is believed that society will develop independently of technology, in this model society shapes the technology rather than technology shaping society. Technology will have no use unless it is designed t be used, using funds that originate from socially acceptable ideas, here technology is not forced upon society, but accepted and adapted by it. The model also has strong a weak forms (Cross et al, 1974). Question 2 The open source software movement may be seen in relation to the way that information is proliferated and spread.
