the impact of cod fishing in respect to many historical realities (Buckley, 2001). Cod fishing is credited with prompting the Vikings to go to the New World, for
example, and it is thought that dried cod actually fed the slave trade (2001). For many decades, both the British and French fished off of the Massachusetts coastline (Loewen, 1996).
Cod was important to the New England economy and may be thought of as a staple of sorts. The British and French would fill their hulls with the cod
fish and would reportedly go to the shore and "lay in firewood and fresh water and perhaps capture a few Indians to sell into slavery in Europe" (Buckley, 1996, p.80).
There was not necessarily a cause and effect relationship between cod and slavery, but the two were parallel realities of the day. Further, it is more likely than not that
the fishermen also transmitted illness as a result (1996). This was detrimental. However, in general, cod was good for the settlers at the time. From a great deal of
evidence, and anecdotes, a student writing on this subject can see that the slave trade and cod fishing are inextricable. Cod fishing was important to history, especially at a time
