systems, data warehouse, expert systems? Artificial intelligence (AI) has been the subject of study and conjecture for decades, but it has had some
real applications in several areas. One of these is in banking, where the "fuzzy logic" of AI often is used to provide decisions on whether to extend loans to
specific individuals. These systems are useful where there can be varying circumstances that need to be considered in reaching decisions, such as is the case in considering whether to
extend credit on an individual basis. Though an individuals credit score may be below threshold level for consideration for a loan, the form of AI used in arriving at
these decisions can "learn" to take into account recent changes in circumstances, matters of character or other considerations to free loan officers time, automate processes and guard against future claims
of discrimination in lending. AI systems are less useful where data is more qualitative, which is where database management systems and expert systems
are of greater use. These systems operate precisely as instructed, without variation. They are useful for maintaining historical information that can be used to guide future decisions; track
the collective skills of a workforce; categorize customers purchases during a single visit to a retail store; or other points pertinent to operations.
The data warehouse can supply information on a similar basis, but can collect information other than that specifically defined. As example, a data warehouse in a health care setting
can send patients reminders that they need to have blood pressure or cholesterol checked and then add the patient to a variety of categories designed either to monitor the individuals
