The next generation Internet protocol is accepted to be Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) that holds promise for supplying many more Internet addresses - of which there is now becoming a shortage (Welcome to the IPv6 Information Page, 2003) - and for giving priority to the transmission of real-time information over other traffic such as email. If IPv6 can become widespread in its use, several industries could be directly affected. Currently, there are trials being held (based in Japan) to assess the value of IPv6 in online education. Direct student-instructor contact is an issue in many online programs, and IPv6 brings promise of increasing the possibility of such contact. Beyond such use in education, IPv6 may be able to bring into the realm of possibility the promises of "Internet-controlled TVs, refrigerators and automobiles" (Full experiments on IPv6 to begin, 2003; p. PG). Currently, there is not enough real-time capability existing to make such pursuits profitable. Also, General Motors Onstar program is limited in its communication with motorists to telephone conversations. These are dependent on the availability of cellular telephone service in the area in which the traveler is, which can be problematic in remote areas. Onstar provides a wealth of services, and it could be even more effective were it able to operate over the Internet rather than by voice. 2.
