researcher outlined this sample paper based on the Weyden painting. Rogier van der Weydens (1435) painting "St. Luke Painting the Virgin
and Child" is a 15th century oil and tempera panel that demonstrates the use of color, depth and imagery in the artistry of this period. The painting gives the
impression of an intimate setting, but also draws the viewer into the background, into the larger scope of the painting and the images outside of the room. This element
of depth has been demonstrated in a number of other paintings and works of art and distinguishes Weydens work from other depictions of the Virgin Mary.
The elements of the painting that are located in the foreground include the St. Luke, the Madonna and the child, sitting in a small
enclosure while St. Luke paints a picture. This intimate setting, the setting of two individuals posing for a painting, is interesting because it lacks of a sense of physical
connection between the three central figures. St. Luke, while he is painting the Virgin and child, does not appear to be looking directly at them. The Virgin, though
nursing her child, holds the child away from herself, and the child does not make contact with her breast, though she offers it to him to nurse. The Virgin
also looks at her child, rather than at St. Luke, though it is obvious from the intimacy of their setting that she is aware that he is painting her and
